We know we’re on to a good thing but it was so nice to hear from Father Sergio Cabrera, pastor of Iglesia Catolica del Rincon in Havana about how well things are going with our program to collect and ship baseball equipment to the kids of Cuba.
In the sad way of things Cuban it took a full year for Father Cabrera’s letter and pictures to arrive in Connecticut — but it was well worth the wait.
Rev. Cabrera tells us that with the arrival of the first uniforms, gloves, bats, baseballs, etc. they organized a new baseball league there for the children and young people. Immediately some 80 “ninos y adoloscentes” were allowed to play so much better equipped than ever before. They built a new diamond at the church. They also spread some of the materials around to other organizations; and, since so much more has been sent since he wrote us, we know that this is an expanding thing for the benefit of so many youngsters.
How cool to see kids having a good time playing a game they love so much — and how nice that the good work of so many people here and in Massachusetts and Maine are applied so well. Thanks again to all the coaches, parents and friends who gace these kids so much. We’re far from done so consider this a happy update.
I’ve loaded some of Rev. Cabrera’s pictures onto my Facebopok page for all to see. This is only the beginning.
